The Apnea Collective
This webpage and The Apnea Collective mobile application were designed with two core objectives.
Before I get into this, I want to state that absolutely NO secret marks will be taken or published. All catch posts are region based and thats the extend to what I’ll see.
The first objective, is to bring about a greater sustainability in how humans fish across the world. Around 85% of our fish stocks are over exploited but as a human collective, we are doing better. We can see this in the everyday choices the vast majority of us choose, whether thats to ride the bus, or to eat more ethically and locally sourced meat. I want to push forward and understand more on how we can improve our fishing. And the data you upload to the mobile application will help me work this out. Every data entry will allow me to create more accurate averages, from analysing the size of fish being caught, to being able to calculate the most sustainable sizes of each fish. If I can get a good proportion of the spearfishing community on here, this very well may be the largest study to take place. Everything I discover, will be published on this site, and eventually on the mobile application for the community to
The second objective of this application is to bring the entire apnea community together. Whilst working for Spearfishing U.K, I found that many people were struggling to find buddies, whether spearfishing or freediving. The Facebook groups are great in some aspects, but not this. So The Apnea Collective has built in a dedicated buddy finder. The poster can publish all the details of the dive, where (closest town to meet), when, depth diving, boat or shore and the rest of the content. The original poster will also have full ability to be able to decline or accept users who request to join. Once a user has been accepted, a private messaging service will pop up so the users can communicate easier to arrange their dive. On top of this, when you upload a dive thats been done, you’ll have the option to input the visibility, and if it was a spearfishing session, the catch. Other users can use this information to determine whether it’s worth them going out for a dive, and to see what species are around.
About the Authors:
Laith Dajani
I studied Marine & Natural History Photography for his undergrad with a passion for Marine life. I didn’t quite know where I was going with my life at the time. Being a poor student, I bough myself a cheap rod and tried to take up angling. Note the word tried, I failed. Speaking to a lecturer at the time, she suggested I try spearfishing, something I have never heard of before. Upon asking what it was, and receiving a response of “well, it’s where you swim to the bottom of the sea, and shoot your fish”. I knew that it was the sport for me. Since starting in May 2018, I now run the largest spearfishing store in the U.K, hold a world record under my belt and have started The Apnea Collective.
